Game 36 Preview: Tampa Bay Lightning vs Carolina Hurricanes

The Tampa Bay Lightning (21-11-3, 45 PTS), which — bolstered by the magnificent effort Victor Hedman provided in his return — , acquitted themselves rather well in a sound defeat of the Predators the other night, welcomes a former divisional rival, the Carolina Hurricanes (14-14-7, 35 PTS). The Hurricanes fell victim, a la the Lightning not too long ago, to Alex Ovechkin and the ever-lethal power play of the Capitals last night despite controlling play for the bulk of action.

Tampa Bay continues to get healthier as forward Tom Pyatt, who’s been recovering from a broken collarbone suffered early in the season, is set to appear in tonight’s contest, netminder Ben Bishop, who has posted shutouts in each of his last two appearances against Carolina, gets the start and — as Cory Sznajder of the excellent ‘Canes blog Shutdown Line wrote yesterday — Carolina has been particularly sensitive most nights to shot and attempt differentials this season, areas the Lightning have steadily improved upon in recent weeks.

Other obligations precluded a longer write-up here but, in a nutshell, the table is set rather favorably for the remainder of this fourth ten-game season segment in which the Lightning have already earned 8 points as there is just brief road foray against the Panthers on Monday before the Christmas holiday break and two additional matches at home before beginning another daunting trek out West. Tampa Bay would do well for itself to take care of business, as it so often has done at home this season, against Carolina.
