Game 14 Statcap: Lightning 4, Blues 2

If you’re looking for an impressive win for the Tampa Bay Lightning, look no further than this 4-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues.

After a couple of ugly wins (over the Chicago Blackhawks, for example) where goaltending saved the day, the Lightning went stride for stride with one of the league’s best puck possession teams over the past few seasons, limited their opportunities around Ben Bishop (playing on the second night of a back-to-back, no less) and capitalizing on their own chances en route to a deserved 4-2 victory.

The Fenwick timeline below shows the Lightning slightly trailing the Blues in unblocked shot attempts throughout the night, but the gap was small and the Lightning did a good job of limiting St. Louis’ opportunities to the perimeter of the offensive zone. Unfortunately, that’s exactly where Alex Pietrangelo scored from on a long, floating wrister than somehow eluded Ben BIshop to give the Blues the early lead.

The Lightning pushed back, however, eventually evening things up and gaining/holding a lead by working more pucks into the slot and around the net, something you’d expect from the bigger, more aggressive Blues squad that the Lightning defended well.

The final scoring chance count was 15-11 in favor of the Lightning, an advantage created entirely in the middle frame when the Bolts out-chanced the Blues 7-3. The first and third periods saw even opportunities, with both clubs registering four chances apiece in the 1st and 3rd periods.

The standout skater for the Lightning in terms of scoring chance differential was Valtteri Filppula, was was +5/-2 at evens and was all over the ice for the entire night. Perhaps familiarity with the Blues from his days as a member of the Detroit Red Wings helped, but he was tricky with the puck all night, routinely faking Blues’ defenders out of their skates, gliding through the neutral zone with the puck, or feeding slick passes in the offensive zone. He scored an insurance goal for the Bolts late in this one and nearly added another on the empty net, but Jay Bouwmeester made a terrific play with his stick to knock the puck out of the air on its way to the goal.
