Game 6 Statcap: Lightning 5, Kings 1

An early goal can make following “fancy stats” trends very difficult, as score effects can take hold long before they reasonably should. After Ryan Malone deflected in a Sami Salo slap shot when the game was barely 30 seconds old, Tampa Bay created a lead they would never relinquish, putting the normally strong possession LA Kings on their heels very early, forcing them to pinch in at the bluelines and leave their forwards in deep during transition plays. As the saying goes, catch-up hockey is losing hockey, and after Jonathan Quick gave up his third goal on 17 shots, he got yanked by head coach Darryl Sutter near the end of the second period.

From that point on, the shot attempt gap widened in LA’s favor but the scoring chances heavily favored the Lightning. While LA was controlling play, getting their dump and chase and cycle games going, Tampa Bay was killing with speed in transition, highlighted by what became essentially a 3-on-1 break with Steven Stamkos, Ryan Malone, and Martin St. Louis as Drew Doughty and Robyn Regehr both attempted to defend the same man (Stamkos).

Eric Brewer and Ryan Malone were the scoring chance standouts. Brewer managed not to be on the ice for a single even strength scoring chance against (+3/-0) in over 12 minutes of even strength TOI, which is superb considering he’s now a bottom-pairing defenseman working a rookie into the NHL.  Ryan Malone, still riding with Stamkos and St. Louis, was +7/-3 at evens, which is very good and is indicative of how Jon Cooper did a good job of getting his top line away from the defensive prowess of the Justin Williams-Anze Kopitar-Dustin Brown line. It’s one of the big advantages during the ongoing homestand and despite still being a fairly green head coach, Cooper is rolling his lines equitably and efficiently.
