Game 46 Scoring Chances: Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Toronto Maple Leafs

I tracked chances at 16-15 overall in favor of Tampa Bay. While the bottom pairing of Keith Aulie and Radko Gudas has taken significant steps forward in their development this season — for much of the time not looking out of place on an NHL lineup — they had a rough night here against the speed and skill up front of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Aulie finished the night a team worst +1/-7 in even strength scoring chances, and Gudas wasn’t much better at a measly +2/-7. Both guys are known more for their physical play than their stick work or positioning, and the skill/speed combo utilized especially by Toronto’s third line proved too much for the young defenders. Matt Frattin managed a stellar +6/-1 and linemate Clarke MacArthur was +7/-1, further raising questions as to why Leafs head coach Randy Carlyle continues to use enforcers like Colton Orr and Frazer McLaren on a regular basis while scratching the impressive Frattin.

Granted, the Tampa Bay Lightning are not known for their defensive prowess, so maybe we ought to pump the brakes a bit on Frattin and MacArthur, but for one night, they were dominant, particularly in a match-up against the slower Aulie and Gudas.

With Ryan Malone out of the lineup and Cory Conacher traded to the Ottawa Senators, the Lightning have consistently struggled to find offense (or defense…) from the Vincent Lecavalier line, and he struggled again here. Vinny, like the aforementioned Gudas and Aulie, struggles against elite speed. He was victimized to the tune of a +3/-8 scoring chance night at evens skating mostly with Alex Killorn on his wing.

Richard Panik didn’t fare much better going +2/-8, as the youth movement in Tampa Bay continues to experience a few growing pains.
