Game 47 Scoring Chances: Tampa Bay Lightning at Boston Bruins

Note: We’re posting the scoring chance and possession data for each of 2012-2013 season’s games as practice for next season, when we’ll be publishing scoring chance, possession, time on ice and zone events in addition prior to breaking down each match.

Overall I had chances at 14-12 in favor of the Lightning, 10-8 at even strength as Boston registered three late chances on a power play late in the third. Most of the action came in the second period, where Boston took a slight edge that they held onto for the rest of the way, but the scoring chance data — like the shot/possession data — shows a tight game played between these two squads, with the teams matching up very evenly across the lineup. This is evidenced by no players with significant even strength scoring chance differentials.

The simple fact that the Lightning were able to hang around against the Bruins in Boston is not insignificant, and performances like this one in the future would be a big step towards more consistent success going forward in the  Jon Cooper era. This team has enough talented forwards to convert on the scoring chances they do generate as long as they find a way to create them without ceding so much in the defensive zone that they can’t keep up. Outchancing what might be the best defensive team in the Eastern Conference — with a likely Norris candidate in Zdeno Chara and the presumptive Selke winner in Patrice Bergeron — is no small feat, particularly on the road.

While there are no moral victories in sports, it is encouraging to see this type of performance against what will be a division rival starting next season.
